Notes & News December 25, 2011

What Is Christmas?

Christmas is the day set aside to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christmas has been celebrated on December 25 for 1600 years.

The word “Christmas” is derived from the Old English words “Christes Maesse” or “Christ’s Mass.

   Christmas is a . . .

Holy Day -- a time to give thanks for God’s great gift – the hope of salvation through Jesus.

Holiday -- a time to relax and share love and good will with family and friends.

Many traditions convey the Christmas spirit:

·      Carols tell the story of the Nativity in music.

·      Gifts are given in memory of God’s gift that first Christmas.

·      Advent wreaths bear a candle for each of the four Sundays preceding Christ’s birth.

·      Nativity scenes depict the Holy family and those who came to worship.

Lutheranism 201

Pastor continues in-depth sessions following fellowship each Sunday.  Our sessions will resume on January 8.  Pastor will then look at human beings and their unique place in God’s creation.

Thanks

Pastor and Gail would like to express thanks to the many members, the Board of Directors, and the secret Santa who sent cards and good wishes this Christmas season.  This is a special congregation with a great deal of love to share.
