Notes and News June 20Tiny Gestures Ali McGraw is known as an actress. She is also known for her exercise tapes and her artistic ability. What is little known about this gifted person is that she also sets aside time to serve the poorest of the poor. Every so often, she journeys to Guatemala to work with poverty-stricken children who are known as "the children of the dump." The children and their parents try to eke out an existence by sifting through garbage dumps hoping to find something of value which they can sell to get money for food. Imagine the lift they get when someone of substance and concern comes to their aid. "I'm doing a great deal of give away time, which is fulfilling, in areas that are meaningful," the actress says. "I believe all of us can make the world better in tiny, tiny gestures that add up to a lot of energy." With those words, Miss McGraw challenges us all. Too often we may think that we cannot do great things to make a difference in this world. But what if we simply considered giving some of our time "in tiny, tiny gestures" to lift some of the burdens, to ease some of the hurts and inequities in this world? Plenty of opportunities locally It is not necessary for us to journey to Guatemala or some other poverty-ridden corner of the earth. Wherever we live, there is enough suffering in our own community that needs to be addressed by someone. Might not that someone be you? Within our community there is a person or group of people who greatly need to know that someone cares. Could you offer some "give away time" to a shelter for the homeless? Might you give an hour to visit a lonely elderly person? What about elderly person? What about offering to watch a single mother's children while she does a bit of shopping? What about giving your hands — your time and abilities to help those in need in your church community? Jesus once asked the challenging question "What more are you doing than others?" (Matthew 5:47). Christians are obviously called upon to "be doers of the word, and not hearers only" (James 1:22). Good stewardship involves serving God and others with a portion of our time.
